What Will I Learn?

To be competent and prepared for your first position in accounts or finance, you should get taught a number of 'hands on' basic accounting skills. For example you'll need knowledge of how to operate computerised book-keeping records, the double-entry system, vat, payroll, reconciliations to name but a few. Higher grade subject matter is also available for more senior personnel in the industry. Where Would I Find Work?

Anyone with credible qualifications in accounts/book-keeping can offer themselves to all sorts of commercial and public sector organisations. You have plenty of scope as every company needs at least one person to deal with their finances. You might be expected to deal with all financial matters in a small business, or be part of a large team in a major corporation. You could seek employment in either the public or the private sector - the chances for career progression are there in both sectors. Yet again some people branch out on their own, and handle the tax and accounting work for a bunch of other businesses.

Is This Really The Career For Me?

Naturally you must have competent maths skills to do this sort of work. But if you also take pleasure in working thoroughly and steadily, and paying meticulous attention to the detail of the job you're doing then this work is probably for you. People who like systems and order make good book-keepers and accounting staff.

Employers rely heavily on their financial and accounting staff, and so they look for people who are completely trustworthy and loyal.

Do Your Research

Various accounting and financial courses abound on the internet and throughout the country. To find the most suitable one for you - you must do your research thoroughly. So as we mentioned earlier, don't just look at one or two - when you've been through several you'll have a much better idea of what's important to you, and what you can actually expect.

Some will be entirely college-based, some will be entirely distance learning and others will have a combination of both. It's really all down to your circumstances, and whether you prefer to work at home at your own pace, or in a class with several others all working through the syllabus together.
